Google looks to sell Motorola’s set-top box business – For $2B

Earlier this year, it had been rumored that Google was interested in selling Motorola’s set-top box and television equipment business. Well according to Bloomberg, Google is still continuing its plans to sell this part of Moto’s business. The Mountain View-based company has hired firm Barclays to look for buyers. Google is said to be looking for up to $2 billion in the deal, but the sale is in its very early stages so the exact terms are not clear.

Since Google and Motorola’s $12.5 billion deal went official this summer, Motorola has gone through several changes company-wide. The most notable change occurred when up to 4,000 employees were laid off in addition to the closing of 30 of Motorola’s 90 worldwide facilities. Furthermore, there have been several executive changes as the company looks to get back into creating some serious mobile devices. Stay tuned to DroidDog for any updates to what looks to be a major deal in the very near future.

Google is restructuring it's new company and maybe thinks it doesn't need this part of the business. We'll see if it actually gets sold.

I agree with JQuest81. Why would you get rid of the set top business and just create a bad ass Google TV Nexus version.  I am not sure if everyone knows, but Apple was recently granted a patent on a cable set top box.  I think Google needs to hold on to this part of the business to prevent Apple or at least make it extremely difficult for them to enter into the television arena.  Google, you probably need to answer these questions before selling off something you made need later?

I don't know how difficult this would be or how they would do this, but why they don't take the set top box business and use it to  launch a killer Google TV box...

This further cements that it was all about the patents...
