Seeing a pop-up like that on your device running a custom ROM sounds pretty sweet right? I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing it on my phone or Nexus 7. Well, a new start-up, OTA Update Center, has begun providing a new service aiming to make this a reality for our excellent developers on your various Android devices. According to their website,
OTA Update Center is an Over The Air update service, that is free of use. This project is especially for the rom devs around, to be able to implement an easy to use, and free OTA Update app. The project has one goal, to provide a way to provide OTA Updates as easy and noob friendly as possible.
What OTA Update Center is trying to do is something that wasn’t previously practical for developers to do themselves. Their service provides code to be added to the custom ROMs, they provide a centralized location for developers to upload their ROMs, OTA Update Center provides an app, and you’re automatically notified when your custom rom has been updated. You’ll then have the option to just download the update or download and flash directly. You’ll also have the option to factory wipe as well as wipe the cache/dalvik cache before flashing. OTA Update Center doesn’t state this, but I also think it would be handy if the developer could send OTA release notes before flashing so you could find out what changes were made, and any special instructions for flashing. The coolest part I think is that this service is that it’s free. Regardless, I think this service sounds awesome and I hope our favorite developers give it a shot. Hopefully it works out and making sure your device is running the latest ROM will be a lot easier.
