Poll: Can The Nexus 7 Withstand An iPad Mini Assault?

The Nexus 7 has already proven itself to be a worthy competitor in the tablet marketplace. However, with the impending launch of Apple’s alleged iPad Mini, will the Nexus 7 remain the go-to option for budget tablet buyers?

In case you haven’t heard, the price of the iPad Mini is slated in between $200 and $250, the exact same tiers as Google’s 7-incher. In addition, the tablet will offer a similar feature set, with a 7-inch display and front-facing camera. One area where the iPad Mini is expected to succeed is in display technology. The Nexus 7′s display isn’t a slacker by any means, but Apple’s offering could sport a Retina-branded front panel.

So, with similar prices and different functionality, which tablet do you think will be more successful in the marketplace? Let us know in the comments below.

Doesn't matter what happens.   After witnessing Apple's overly litigious behavior I'm not going to buy any of their products.

kanoneyez 71 pts

IGnatiusTFoobar I'm in full agreement with you--to the point that my wife was looking at an Apple product the other day. I reminded her she'll pay double for Apple than for other products that do the same thing or more. Since Apple wants to infringe on my right, change this from a free country able to make choice to a dictatorship ruled by Apple, I will do anything within my legal right to denounce that company. They are the electronics industry equiv of Hitler.

I have the Nexus 7 and I absolutely love it.. I wouldn't trade it in for nothing..very fast with it quad core processor and love the voice search..LOVING GOOGLE!!!

As good as the Nexus 7 is, Apple simply has too many existing and aspiring customers attracted to their compellingly designed devices, software ecosystem, and customer support. When geeks, Grandma, and the kids all want to use Android devices and the software available on them it will be different. The Nexus 7 can't do that all by itself. It's progress, but not a revolution.

jabsdad 5 pts

I liveI in a large enough city. Best Buy, Staples, Sams, Office Max, Office Depot NEVER have Nexus 7 in stock. Makes zero difference if it is an iPad killer. If people can't buy them they're as good as sunk. I'll bet when the iPad Mini comes out I'll be able to mosey on over to BB and pick one up day one. Not so for the N7. Oh I hear ya, the N7 is so popular and in such huge demand they can't keep up production. OK whatever lie makes you feel better.

MerryMay 5 pts

@jabsdad I went to Gamestop and they said I had to preorder. However, I went to Walmart and they had lots of it. It wasn't on their display though, I had to ask about it since their website indicated they had it.

shotinthejaw 6 pts

I will buy an iPad mini and put it up against my nexus 7 but I bet it collects dust just like my iPad 3rd gen since the nexus has been released.

One thing that I wish android had was something like itunes U

Rambohacker 7 pts

Max_TO They do, it's called Google Play or Google Music, although I personally like the Spotify better

Nexus has no chance. Only few know about it, it's not marketed much and it's not sold everywhere. Apple products are completely opposite with strong brand recognition and wide availability. Majority will walk in the store and head straight for iPad without giving it a single thought. It is a shame, N7 has so much potential.

kanoneyez 71 pts

@borodin1: We will let the masses drink the Apple Cool-Aid as we sip our vintage, private reserve wine. ;-)

zcaslin 5 pts

@kanoneyez Yeah your not a freetard.

Rambohacker 7 pts

borodin1 It is starting to be marketed better, I'm constantly seeing TV commercials for it. I hope they start selling it in more stores besides Office Depot, Staples & Gamestop. They need to hit Best Buy & similar type stores to get better recognition.

funstaticone2468 7 pts

@borodin1 dude they just sold over 8 million tablets last. Month I guess you was the one that did not know.

Once the iPad mini comes out, we should expect to see Apple suing over the Nexus 7 claiming that it looks too much like there iPad mini and that the tech was stolen from Apple.

chasev13 6 pts

I think the ipad mini will definitely be $275-350 because the 4th gen iPod touch started out at $220 and they might not have an 8gb version.

hinds2009 8 pts

Couldn't care my nexus 7 rocks.

zcaslin 5 pts

@hinds2009 And as useful as one too.

hinds2009 8 pts

@zcaslin your a troll in an Android forum huh sip your icoolaid !

Steebie 5 pts

I think that the mini will crush the Nexus if it's executed properly. However, I can't see Apple giving the full iPad experience on the mini. Not enough profit per unit and it would destroy iPad sales. Having owned both a 7" and a 10", 7" is just plain better. Apple doesn't want to eat up its 17 million units per year on a budget model that will kill the sales of the profitable one.

abhimanyu965 5 pts

Unfortunately not. even though the nexus 7 boasts killer specs for its price, fact remains that it is a device fancied only by purists, no help to any marketing to assist that :(..Whereas the average Joe would kill for a more economically feasible iteration of the I pad.

Max_TO 7 pts

Google got it so right with the Nexus 7, from the power packed inside this 7'' tab, to the 25 dollar gift card included. It makes for a perfect tab for those looking for their first tablet, or for those looking for a second, more portable tablet. I will go out on a limb and say that I don't see the mini pad doing anything other then cut into regular ipad sales. It will also cause apple to rethink there ipods the first mini tab. There was a reason why Steve stayed away from the mini market and Google nexus, and keep on rocking!

allmotor91 6 pts

@Max_TO After having a nexus 7 for a wile I can't wait for a iPad. The nexus is so buggy and freezes all the time.

KennyO112 8 pts

allmotor91  Max_TO I call bullsh!t.....that or you're the only person in the world with those issues. Not one review from anywhere concurs with that. My Nexus flies through any task and has never locked up. JB is not in the least buggy. It's fine to like iOS better, plenty on people feel that way, but don't make up stuff.

zcaslin 5 pts

@KennyO112 @allmotor91 @Max_TO you call it whatever you want I have one and it sucks. I can't even play a game wile an app is downloading witout it freezing up and studdering. And try out chrome that doesn't play most HTML videos that iOS will. Yeah so great to be free and open.

KennyO112 8 pts

zcaslin  KennyO112  allmotor91   The issues you describe were a common occurrence with my old Transformer Prime running ICS, but I have not experienced any of those issues with the Nexus 7. I can download/update apps in the background with no lag and with flash installed (side loaded) I get only a slightly slower web experience than my desktop. I again point to every stellar review (many from notoriously pro apple tech sites) that backs this up. I'm not saying the device is perfect, nor does it top the iPad (that costs twice as much) but I don't think you issues are as often as you claim.  Max_TO

zcaslin 5 pts

@KennyO112 @allmotor91 @Max_TO You're right you know exactly how my tablet works and doesn't work. it has been doing it less since I haven't been using it much due to its great performance. It's just sad apple can make a much better and smoother tablet with 2 less cores. I guess the war on lag is just starting and will be along time till its at iOS level smooth.

KennyO112 8 pts

zcaslin  KennyO112  allmotor91  Max_TO I guess you are right, it's really not fair to make assumptions about your own experiences, my apologies. Lag has generally been the biggest issue with Android for sometime now, but I can say in using both that 4.1.1 is the closest Android has gotten to iOS as far as smoothness and responsiveness.

zcaslin 5 pts

@KennyO112 @allmotor91 @Max_TO Jelly bean is better but I wish google would focus more on user experience than cramming in more features that are not ready yet. Scrolling in chrome should be better with the hardware it has.

KennyO112 8 pts

 zcaslin  KennyO112  allmotor91  Max_TO Very true.

deelanier 5 pts

Man, mine has never looked up and Jelly Bean is the first OS I haven't rooted and feel no need to. @allmotor91

zcaslin 5 pts

@Max_TO You know the gift card was only for the preorders right?

 zcaslin  Max_TO

Uh,  no,  I bought my 16 gig at Wally World and got the free $25 in Google Play.

Max_TO 7 pts

Mine was not a pre order but I still got the $25 plus the transform movie @zcaslin Hmmm I didn't pre order but still got the $25 bonus as well as the transformer movie

zcaslin 5 pts

@Max_TO I got mine at staples the week it came out with nothing. That's google for you can't do a launch to save their life.

geohart 5 pts

@zcaslin you probably didn't know to set up a gmail account. That would explain why your experience has been so poor. Probably better of for you to stick to iOS.

zcaslin 5 pts

@geohart Yes it's so hard to set up a gmail account you freetard. Couldn't be google fucking up the orders like how everybody who preordered didn't get theirs till weeks after it was released.

geohart 5 pts

@zcaslin yep, its everyone else, that was able to get the $25 that is stupid. Sorry no one gave you step by step instructions, you special man.

funstaticone2468 7 pts

@zcaslin then you should of got yours at Google I didn't preorder and order 3 , at least 2 weeks between orders and received them within 4 days , both times, sending one tablet from Cali to north fork Va . And the all worked fine and getting a gmail account is easy, sorry you are having a hard time

kanoneyez 71 pts

I think each camp's fans will remain loyal, not enticed by the other. However, general consumers can probably be swayed either way. I've convinced two former iPhone users to try Android. They are happy they switched. On the other hand, I've read of others ditching Android for iPhone. As for me, everyone already knows I'd never own an Apple product even if it were gifted to me. (I'd sell it and make a profit.)

Rambohacker 7 pts

The Nexus 7 is easier to use, has superior software, superior hardware, it's display is equal to a Retina-branded display and your not constrained by the restrictions of Apple who has not come out with anything new in years. It's just an iPhone with a 7" screen and the iPhone really hasn't changed that much since the 1st one. It was great in it's day, but that was last decade.

allmotor91 6 pts

@StephenHaxton I think you need to take your meds then use the nexus 7 again.

Rambohacker 7 pts

allmotor91  StephenHaxton I have a iPad & a iPad2, didn't keep my iPad 3 cause it kept freezing, was bigger, heavier and there was hardly any apps available. I've had the Samsung Galaxy tab, I've even had the HP TouchPad (which I hacked & put android on) & The Nexus 7 is by far the best tablet out, and has the least amount of glitches. It's the 1st tablet I've owned that does what I want it to do when I want it to do it. I've not yet had to reboot it from freezing which is a lot more than I can say for my iPads. Either your a blind apple sheep fan-boy or you've never had a iPad, they are glitchy or mayby you got a defective Nexus 7. Mine has not crashed once, I did download a app that kept freezing, but I just closed it, uninstalled it and found one that was legit.

zcaslin 5 pts

@StephenHaxton @allmotor91 As soon as you said an iPad has no apps I know you are full of shit. You should read a book on trolling if you're going to do it, because you suck at it.

Rambohacker 7 pts

zcaslin    allmotor91  Read what I said, the iPad 3 had hardly any apps available, I was referring to when it 1st came out and in comparison to the iPad 2 it had a lot less apps because almost every app had to be rewritten to work with the iPad3, not so much the case now but still a issue.

Max_TO 7 pts

I agree the ipad is just a big ipod. Having said that, I do have an ipad and do like it. However. I did pick up the nexus and I simply love it. For them minimal ipad to maker an impact it needs to be much more innovative then just a bigger ipod touch. Regardless, I see the mini only taking away sales from other apple products and not really hurting the nexus 7 @StephenHaxton
