It’s done. Instagram is now owned by Facebook. The deal is complete, and Instagram isn’t that little hipster company anymore. What a tragedy!
Not according to the two companies, it isn’t. The Instagram team may be already moving into the Facebook offices, but they say that the “Instagram app and its features will stay the same one you know and love.” Facebook agrees, saying it is “committed to building and growing Instagram independently,” and that “Instagram will continue to serve its community, and we will help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure.” Meaning Instagram will have access to Facebook’s resources while still being developed by the original team. If they’re telling the truth, this is great news. Instagram won’t change and won’t be screwed up by Facebook (no offense, Facebook, but you built a service people need but isn’t too well designed. Instagram is the absolute opposite).
Facebook also let out a strange tidbit of information. They said “we also can’t wait to work with the talented Instagram team to improve the mobile experience.” Does this mean Facebook will try to learn from the Instagram team on how to design a usable app? Sounds great to me!
