Happy Birthday To The T-Mobile G1, The Phone That Started Modern Android

October 22nd is a very special day to me in two way. First, I was born on this day. That’s not all that exciting though, as the G1 was launched on that exact same day four years ago. Everything Android, this site included, can tribute to the G1, so take a moment and recognize the phone’s importance. Now that the tribute has been made, who’s ready for some cake?

It would be nice for Androids 5th Anniversary to re-release the original G1 but with updated specs. Maybe as a special edition only available on the Google Play Store. Come on Google, it's never too late to start planning early!

As awesome as it was for it's time it looks pretty dated. The G2 looks much more modern. Too bad it never caught on.

TheDark_Knight Unfortunately, the G2 focused a little bit too much on looking modern than durability. The G1 had that spring loaded mechanism that kept the keyboard fairly secure whereas the G2's hinge relied too heavily upon gravity so if I were to pick up the phone from an upside down position, the screen would hang down and keyboard would be out when I turned it over. Don't get me started on the lack of 5th row on the G2's keyboard haha. It definitely was an awesome device though, lasted me almost a year before I snagged that hinge on a line and the phone went to two pieces :( RIP G2 (My G1 still ives strong though!)

@AWuzzer That's true. I guess if they made the G2's hinge and keyboard better it would have done a lot better.

I was using my G1 the other day (I occasionally go back to it), and I was thinking how cool it would be to have the exact phone, except for a new processor, better resolution screen, and better camera.  Anyone else on that train with me?

@laphoneuser I've said the same thing. Update all the specs but keep the form factor and I would go back to it. Loved that phone.
