Amazon just announced via press release that the Kindle Fire 8.9″ HD tablet will begin shipping today, two months after it was announced by Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos. The $299 tablet which features a beautiful 1920×1200 HD display with 254ppi will be available from Amazon’s website today, and available in Best Buy stores tomorrow. The $449 LTE version won’t start shipping until next week.
If you’re eager to grab a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 in the immediate future, Best Buy might be your best option as Amazon’s website already lists the tablet as shipping on December 3rd. That’s a full two and a half weeks from now, so Best Buy and in the coming weeks Radioshack and Staples are likely your best chances at getting one asap.
Amazon’s launch faces some challenges this holiday season with the updated 32GB size of the Nexus 7, iPad mini and Nexus 10. Both Nexus tablets feature best screens than the Kindle Fire HD and aren’t limited to Amazon’s market with the full Play Store at their disposal.
“Kindle Fire HD has been Amazon’s best-selling product worldwide since launch, and that was before we even started shipping the best tablet we’ve ever built,” said Dave Limp, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “With the holiday season upon us, we’re excited to make our $299 Kindle Fire HD 8.9” available early—we think customers are going to love web browsing, email, gaming, watching TV shows, reading magazines, and more on the large, stunning HD screen, with fast Wi-Fi and exceptional audio.”
