ASUS To Unveil $99 Nexus 7 Tablet Next Month At CES?

Few things stir up the rumor market like EXIF data from Picasa and this time we’re circling back to the mythical $99 Nexus 7 tablet. According to the picture below, an unreleased ASUS tablet model, codenamed ME172V was used to take pictures on an ASUS related account earlier this week. The model number matches a device that went through GL Benchmark earlier this month further heightening the possibility that ASUS has something new up its sleeves.

According to the rumor mill, the $99 Nexus 7 tablet will feature Android 4.1.1, a WonderMedia 1GHz CPU, Mail 400MHz GPU, 7″ display with 1024×600 resolution, a microSD slot, 1GB of RAM and a 1 megapixel front-facing camera.

ASUS said they had no plans to make a $99 7″ tablet back in September, but its possible that ASUS was merely throwing us off the scent and does in fact plan to unveil the mythical $99 Nexus 7 tablet in the near future. It’s possible with CES and Mobile World Congress (MWC) coming up in the next 70 days that we could see ASUS take to the stage and make a surprise announcement. It’s also possible the device may not  have the Nexus name attached, but there’s little question a $99 ASUS tablet might appeal in markets where cheaper priced offerings could help Android break ground on new marketshare.
