ASUS Announces $149 7-Inch Android Tablet

It looks like ASUS really is gearing to launch a budget 7-inch tablet, just not a $99 budget tablet.

ASUS has announced its new 7-inch MeMO Pad, which will go on sale for $149.

The ASUS MeMO Pad features the following specs:

  • 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution display
  • 1GHz VIA WM8950 processor
  • Mali-400 GPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB or 16GB internal storage options
  • 1MP front-facing camera with 720HD video capture
  • MicroSD card slot
  • 5GB online cloud storage from ASUS
  • 4270 mAh battery
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The tablet contains pretty low-end specs and is definitely, in no way, a Nexus 7 killer.

Other than the standard black color option, it will also come in “Sugar White”, “Titanium Gray”, and “Cherry Pink”.

ASUS states that we should expect their MeMO Pad to launch this month. However for $10 more, you can get a 7-inch Kindle Fire with a better 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Also, I would suggest just spending $50 more dollars to get the Nexus 7, which has a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, a better 800 x 1280 display resolution, and faster Android software updates.

I personally can't wait for this tablet! I plan on purchasing it. I previously owned a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 and I loved it, but even as a "mid-range" device, it had it's shortcomings. But for my tablet habits, anything with 7 inches and an SD card slot would probably serve me well. I like having my media and applications on the go and any tablet would do just that for me. As a college student, price is a major factor, but with this being made by ASUS, I don't think I'd feel like I'd be buying one of those sketch $99 tablets directly from China. Great price, good brand, if it performs as it should, it'd be perfect. I'd love to know a release date or at least a quarter.

pr3ttyp0is0n I have to wonder why you no longer have the Galaxy Tab.
