Verizon Galaxy Nexus Reaches End Of Life, Gone From Shelves

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus was a very interesting device from the very beginning. It was the first Nexus with LTE. However, it was also a device of many problems. Its unlocked brother had enough battery life issues as it was, but the Verizon Galaxy Nexus took it a step further with battery draining LTE radios. There were many who got devices that would lose signal. It was not compatible with many accessories due to the thicker body.

And its biggest problem was updates. While the GSM model got updates straight from Google, Verizon decided to approve each update. This means that updates were delayed for months. The initial build it shipped with was buggy and problematic, but it didn’t get an update for a long time. When it finally got to Jelly Bean 4.1, many people were either mad or already on custom ROMs (and mad). Even Sprint beat them to the updates with their GNex.

However, through all its problems, it had one of the biggest developer communities of all time. There are still some fantastic ROMs for the device, so owners shouldn’t feel dismayed just because the phone hit its EOL. What are your fondest (and not so fond) memories of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus?

So now I'm curious to see what will happen in the future. Say we break the phone and need to get a replacement through insurance and they don't have the GN in stock. What phone are they going to substitute in its place?

@L0ckett a refurbished one of course...

Glad to read about the gsm version had battery issues. Thought just me. With data on and not using it, only lasts 4.5 hrs. Like the fast updates but not camera or volume levels. Always wondered what happened to the Google phones as they were available for sale one day and then gone y the next. They had to have quantities left. I don't understand people upset about the VZ version; defeats the purpose of having a Google nexus to get a carrier version. I have the unlocked version and an using straight talk and only paying $46 a month. The same plan on VZ would cost me@$120 after fees. Can't wait for Google to push android 5.0.. keeps making this handset feel refreshed and last a longer time

MatteoRodrigo If that's the battery life you get, either you or your phone is doing something wrong.

This was simply the WORST NEXUS EVER MADE PERIOD. I left Sprint thinking Verizon would be better and the Galaxy Nexus would be great what a failure and disgrace that was. The first update to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus came June 2012 which never solved any problems the device had. It launched with dreadful battery life, piss poor signal strength, and clearly disabling bloatware which later would become the hallmark of Verizon. Then what truly opened my eyes was seeing my friends Galaxy Nexus on tmobile it was the difference between night and day. That's what truly opened my eyes to the difference between CDMA and GSM carriers. The tmobile Galaxy Nexus pissed allover the Verizon Galaxy Nexus all day long. June 24th 2012 i gladly left Verizon for Tmobile and sold my piss poor Galaxy Nexus for my Galaxy S3 and lived happily ever after. Since I added my Galaxy Note 2 to tmobile as well so now I have the same 2 lines on tmobile that i use to have on Verizon. My advice to people on Verizon is get out while you can they have crossed the line tinkering with the internals of devices just to install disabling bloatware and crippling wifi notifications as well as stupid cosmetic changes to handsets. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus was a joke to many people and that's exactly why they will never see another Nexus device again. Who ever said the Verizon Galaxy Nexus wasn't a true Nexus was 100 % correct.

@richardyarrell if you didn't root the vzw gnex and install a ROM on it to resolve the issues that's on you.... Also flashed a better radio.zip that made a significant difference.... Anyone who relies on vzw to deliver updates knows they're the slowest... And they are control freaks.... The gnex issues were resolved by Google almost immediately yet vzw dragged their feet... *shock*

@dvitti..Why should people who paid 300 dollars have to go through this too. Unnecessary in my book.

dvitti 9 pts

@richardyarrell ... they shouldn't i agree 100%...however... it is what it is.... The vzw was not a true nexus your right.... Vzw snuck on some crap.... That rife there told me i had to gain root and flash.... I don't want a polluted and restricted phone by vzw....the carriers have too much control...and vzw is the one who screwed those who wanted a vanilla stock nexus experience and the subsequent updates...i do it (root and install roms) because i enjoy it...but the mainstream person should not have to do that...their carrier should learn how to test and release updates much quicker...that's not on google or the hardware (nexus).  it's kind of sad that the droid1 was the first vanilla stock device on vzw (although had some carrier inclusions as well) and the second was the gnex which was brutal prior to the first OTA update vzw released super late....i got the phone on launch just as I did the OG droid... But knew immediately that vzw was up to their old tricks... I live in upstate NY and travel often, I'd love T-Mobile but it's the least reliable of the 4 up here... So vzw it is.

@dvitti..Come June/August people will be dumping Verizon for Tmobile.

dvitti 9 pts

@richardyarrell I would if I could but my work pays for my phone and plan on vzw...

richardyarrell 19 pts

@dvitti..Just couldn't believe it actually.

dvitti 9 pts

@richardyarrell ... I know... They're corporate assholes.... I'm only with then still because my work pays my phone and plan....

richardyarrell 19 pts

@dvitti..Glad you got it like that. Otherwise they Verizon ain't worth as far as I can spit.

dvitti 9 pts

@richardyarrell if I didn't have it like this I would certainly have bought an unlocked nexus 4 and tried at&t...

This phone still dominates.... Running liquid beta3 JB and have no desire or need for a replacement phone....always been a team liquid fan and supporter.... still hate sense and touch wiz skins... I would still prefer this over the note2, DNA and s3...

The device was NOT the first Nexus to be sold by a carrier. That trophy goes to the Nexus S "4G" on Sprint, a Sprint-only device. Get your facts right.

seannnnnanigans You are very right, how could I forget? Thank you, fixed.

So does this mean that Verizon is going to prevent any further updates from Google?

I absolutely love my VZW Galaxy Nexus. I understand the frustration people have with Verizon about the issues regarding updates (trust me I feel it too) but at the same time, it was such an amazing device, the LTE radio provided incredible speeds over the wireless network, the phone worked wonderfully, and it looked nice.On the other hand, this means I'm allowed to get another phone, right? Hmm...
