Motorola’s Products In The Pipeline Don’t Impress Google

Patrick Pichette, Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Google, has made a very bold statement about Motorola, the company Google purchased. When asked about future Motorola products in the pipeline, he said that they are great but nothing special. It’s pretty surprising to hear such criticism about their own company, but that’s the kind of mindset they need to change what is not working and succeed.

“The case with Motorola is that we’ve inherited a pipeline. Motorola has a great set of products, but they’re not really like ‘wow’ by Google standards. Dennis Woodside and his team have inherited 18 months of pipeline that we have to drain right now.”

That may seem like a negative comment, and on the surface it is, but it’s exactly what Motorola needs. If someone can see the issue and admit it, they can get on fixing it. And though some of Motorola’s devices have been legitimately great, they haven’t been eye opening nor wildly successful. Hopefully we’ll see the new management pushing for something amazing soon.

This isn't surprising at all and to think this is what Google brought to ward off Samsung...Hate to say it Motorola is one of the BIGGEST JOKES of the android platform. But they rather be concerned with Samsung Google is ridiculous in my eyes. They need to focus on the sagging manufacturers that are not pulling their weight in the android universe instead of worrying about Samsung. The bottom line here without Samsung the android platform wouldn't even be credible even Google's NEXUS LINE is very soft especially compared to Samsung. As I stated before and will always continue to say SAMSUNG IS ANDROID 213 million handsets sold 40% of the technology market that alone speak for it's self. Google better be thanking their lucky stars.

richardyarrell Actually, if it hadn't been for Motorola, Android wouldn't have been such a success in the States. Yes, I'm talking about the Motorola Droid. That one phone brought Android into the spotlight when it launched on Verizon, especially since Verizon made it out to be the ONLY real competitor to the iPhone of that time. Had Motorola not released such an amazing phone on the biggest network in the US, who knows how Android would be doing now. But I do agree with the article when it mentions how Motorola's Android offerings haven't had that "wow" factor since the OG Droid.

Dirge_Extinct  richardyarrell This is exactly the situation. Motorola, like HTC, was instrumental in the growth of Android. The original DROID was an amazing, WOW, phone. And while the current lineup is good (I have a certain fondness for the RAZR M), there is no wow factor. And Google can give it that.

motorola needs something like the motorola atrix again

They should take notes from what HTC has done with the HTC ONE =)

MichaelLe1 The build quality and design of HTC phones (apart from the lack of onscreen buttons) is unparalleled in the industry. I don't see how Samsung justifies making their low-quality plastic phones when clearly it's possible to be so much better.

roboguy12  MichaelLe1 Samsung's phones are not low quality. Plastic is preferred to metal for many reasons. Durability is one. Sure, metal is more rigid, but aluminum is very soft. it scratches too easy, it discolors when scratched, it dents when plastic would stay the same shape. Plastic is also light, durable if it's the right kind (Samsung uses polycarbonate), cheap, and allows for things like removable backs far easier in design. Plus, Samsung uses a magnesium internal frame in its phones to keep proper structural rigidity. Do HTC phones feel better in the hand? Of course. But Samsung phones are far from cheap.

Haloruler64  MichaelLe1 I have to respectfully disagree. In my opinion, plastic always feels cheap to me, even outside the realm of smartphones. You can take a Macbook for example and compare it to an otherwise superior (spec-wise, I'm not talking about OS preferences) PC, but the Macbook automatically looks more sleek and of higher quality because it's not made out of plastic. Granted this is just one opinion, but I'd like to see a shift towards more solid-feeling metal phones because plastic seems to lower the perceived quality almost immediately. But of course, this is just my opinion and you're entitled to your own as well (not trying to start a battle here).

roboguy12  MichaelLe1 I appreciate the respectfulness! I do agree with you there. Metal feels and looks far higher quality, that's for sure. Though I do dislike metal laptops because of the cold factor. Anyway, I do feel like Samsung's phones aren't cheap and look/feel good for the most part. Not as good, but good. And plastic has its ups and downs, my preference currently is in plastic. But I would not hesitate to get a metal phone.

this is true. Motorola makes well built phones but lack the wow factor... hopefully Google can add to that!
