For those of you who are heavy Pandora streamers, the founder of Pandora has brought some less than ideal news. This week, they are introducing a 40 hour a month streaming limit on mobile devices. The streaming limit will not affect desktop users (thank god), but you mobile users will be cut off past the 40 hour mark. This decision was made because royalty rates have gotten really high, increasing 25% over the last three years and will continue increasing. This has forced them to limit streaming for less than 4% of users, as the average listening time is 20 hours a month.
If you can’t live without Pandora, you’re not left helpless. You can pay $0.99 to gain unlimited listening for the rest of the month, or sign up for Pandora One. Pandora One will grant you unlimited listening and no advertising. This might be sad for some of you, but it’s a free service that will continue to be free. They have to earn money somehow, and if this is the reality, we should accept it.
