Verizon Wireless Creates A List Of Apps That Drains Your Battery And Uses Most Of Your Data

Verizon Wireless Starting Targeted Advertising This Week

Verizon Wireless has released a list of apps that are “high risk” for your Android device.

These apps apparently include these effects:

  • Loss of functionality (e.g., loss of data connection)
  • Unexpected high data usage
  • Battery draining 2 or 3 times faster than normal
  • Security or privacy exposure

The list includes these apps:

  • Asphalt 7: Heat
  • Burger
  • Doodle Jump
  • Draw Something
  • Fruit Ninja Free
  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • Hill Climb Racing
  • Jail Escape
  • Need for Speed: Most Wanted
  • N.O.V.A. 3 – Near Orbit
  • Osmos HD
  • Wreck It Ralph
  • Zombie Frontier

These apps keep your device from going to sleep, so while untouched, this can result in your battery draining 2-3 times faster than normal. But honestly, how many of us leave our games running without actually playing them? The high data usage also probably stems from actually downloading the games.

They also include a list of their top 25 apps based on:

  • Security
  • Battery Consumption
  • Data usage

However, that list is really odd for me because it gives Netflix a 5 out of 5 stars. I would assume that Netflix would be both a battery killer and a data hog considering you’re downloading HD shows/movies onto your Android device. Pandora also gets a 5 out of 5 stars which is equally as baffling considering Pandora even warns users to switch to WiFi due to the data consumption Pandora requires.

So while Verizon Wireless’s lists were a great idea, the execution wasn’t the greatest. Do you have any apps you want to warn users from using?
