After the ban on unlocking phones was passed, a lot of people were angry. Then a petition was passed around, finally netting 100,000 signatures. This means that the White House must respond to the petition, and we hope they will take it seriously. However, we do have some good news. The FCC will be investigating the ban, seeing if it hurts consumers.
The “ban raises competition concerns; it raises innovation concerns,” FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said last night at a TechCrunch CrunchGov event at the sites headquarters… “It’s something that we will look at at the FCC to see if we can and should enable consumers to use unlocked phones.”
Unfortunately, he does not know if the FCC can do anything at all, but he’s determined to do everything in his power if the law is found to be bad for consumers. We hope something will be done soon, though.
