In a move that surprises no one, HTC will go the route of releasing a developer edition of the HTC One instead of releasing a developer friendly device in the first place. You can get this developer phone, which is bootloader and SIM unlocked. for $650. HTC will be releasing this device in limited quantities at the same time as the subsidized versions in the US, so you can get it immediately if you want it.
However, keep in mind a few things. First of all, it does not have the right bands for T-Mobile 3G, so you’re out of luck unless you live in an area that’s getting LTE soon. On another note, if you buy this device, you’re supporting HTC in their quest to lock down consumer devices. This is not something I can get behind. If I buy a phone, I should be able to do what I want with it. Having to buy an off contract device is not a good solution. Tell us what you think in the comments.
