HTC, When We Said Advertise More, We Didn’t Mean Like This

HTC released a new commercial showing BlinkFeed off on the new HTC One. Sense 5 comes with a new feature called BlinkFeed, which replaces the launchers homepage with a clock and a feed of social posts and news. It could be a very useful feature for many people and shouldn’t be discounted immediately. However, this commercial really doesn’t do much of a favor for HTC.

While it is doing the exact thing it should be doing (showing off a real feature of the phone), it’s not exactly doing it in an engaging or pleasant way. It was confusing and weird, and left me feeling a little dazed. But I’m interested in your opinion. What do you think of this commercial? Is it advertising done right or horribly misguided? Tell us in the comments!

This ad was creepy. They should be focusing on the only good feature this phone has which is the front facing speakers.

Where's the ULTRA PIXEL tech,  the best feature of One.

Had it been Apple, every Ad would have literally shouted it and dumbos every where would talk about it as if its the next best thing ever invented!

isn't that like windows phone with live updates on home screen? and we know where wp at, in the toilet!

I think the concept of the ad (like blinkfeed) was good but execution (also like blinkfeed) could have been a little better. It has a creepy intrusive feeling to it, which I guess if you wanted to do some social comentary on the nature of social networking, could be accurate, but to sell a product, not the best presentation. The actors should have had more life to them rather than resembling the twins at the end of the hallway from The Shining.

tylerb2010 Totally agreed. At least they're doing more advertising, it's a start

I think this is exactly what HTC needs to do in their marketing. Face the fact, a commercial has basically 15 - 30 seconds (on average) to endorse their product. A majority of cell phone owners are aware of the top cell phone manufactures and which ones they prefer. So this commercial does two things. First, it shows off a new feature by htc to consumers who are aware of the company and two, it leaves "suggestive impressions" and left people curious about the product/software to those who are not already tied to a certain manufacturer. If this commercial is played enough HTC, in my eyes, has made a major improvement on their previous marketing attempts.

JayHuhn In my personal opinion, it does nothing to make a person want the phone,

Haloruler64  JayHuhn no commercial makes you want the phone, it builds interest to take a look at the phone, and once you do you'll make up your mind on the spot. It's definitely an attention getter, especially the industrialized design.

WColon21  JayHuhn I would very much disagree, Samsung commercials are really well done and make a product immediately appealing bu showing off features that could make your life a lot easier.

So it's like FlipBoard and Window's home screen for the HTC? Cool. Now what else does it do that's going to make me want to buy it? They need better marketing

WColon21 5 pts

DerricoBrown you missed the point, you cant include every single thing in a 20 sec commercial. leaving you with the "what else" is what they were looking for. now go and play with it in a store would be the next step. The marketing here was fine, tasteful, and straight to the point.

DerricoBrown 6 pts

WColon21 Of course you can't include everything in 30 seconds, but I would include the important thing(s) in that time that would make my product stand out more. And in these day and times people are ordering phones online rather then going to the store, so everything you put on commercials should make me want to get the phone now.

WColon21  DerricoBrown If HTC wants to spend more, they can continue featuring the "what else" features in seperate ads. This one is geared towards the social update-conscious crowd.

erikief    Yeah, that's fair to say. I see your point of view

I saw a German ad for the One showcasing it's dual front speakers with a nicely done ad of people in bands and such performing, facing away from the viewer.  I think  that one is particularly effective, now to do it in English :)

573W1E You mind tossing me a link? I'd love to see a good HTC ad.

 Haloruler64 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Huegn5EfA2A I couldn't find a better quality version.

HTC needs to just show off the damn phone.  Show off some other features, (dual front speakers), Ultrapixel Camera.  Who cares about Blinkfeed??

CalvinWilliams 11 pts

because those can be copied. Things like blink feed are made by htc and over time they want that to be somewhat of a household name like samsung is doing with smart stay, s voice ect. Wrong approach but it is what it is

TheDark_Knight 77 pts

@CalvinWilliams What the hell is smart stay? Samsung doesn't show off those type of things that you mention. They show off things that sell, big vivid screen, touch to share, etc. Dual front speakers IS unique and A HUGE selling point. Not fucking Blink Feed!

WColon21 5 pts

TheDark_Knight  CalvinWilliams never heard consumers say im looking for dual front speaker phones only. you're wrong.

TheDark_Knight 77 pts

@WColon21 Of course they don't come in and all for that, it never existed until now! You make it sound like people come into the store asking for the "Blinkfeed" phone. Lol.
