For us Americans, this will seem very strange, but the international models of each Galaxy S model have had an FM radio built in. From the first ever to the third, each one had that radio, which was ripped out for US variants. And a lot of people value that feature, and I’m sure many Americans would too if we had it here. However, Samsung is ending that tradition with the Galaxy S 4, which will not come with an FM tuner. This is how Samsung Russia justifies it:
Our studies show a trend shift of interest to digital broadcasting, specifically – focus on listening to music content in social networks or on the channel YouTube. The flagship model of our products are focused on customers who use digital content, which use modern formats and channels of information consumption. (translated from Russian).
While it’s sound reasoning, we don’t agree with it. That’s like saying that microSD cards are not necessary because we have streaming. No, they serve their purpose in a world where data is precious. But it’s a decision international users will have to deal with. We have done so this whole time.
