Over this last week, we saw a small share of leaked photos, snapshots of carrier’s internal systems, and other bleeding edge news in the Android world. But that stuff gets a bit tiring sometimes, doesn’t it? I think so, and I’m leaving the buzz bits for the hyper-connected out of this week’s Wrap. There was enough material released through official channels to keep me happy anyway…

Sony Ericsson unboxed their own X10, which is good enough I suppose. But it has me wondering if this thing doesn’t still have a kink or two that need working out. Noah unboxed the Cliq XT, which I’m not all that excited about, and someone made an Android kitchen appliance that looks incredibly practical in print. That is, until you reach the price and do some math.

Get more out of what you’ve got…

All done with talking about new devices already? Ah, that feels good. I don’t know about you all, but I get tired of chasing the latest, not-so-great-est gadgets. I feel like a paparazzo, climbing over a sea of flashes to grab the same snap of the reality celeb du jor that everyone else has. You’ll have to forgive the shorter Wrap this week as a result. That’s also why we’re focusing more on getting the most of what you already have. Whether you want to spruce up your phone with a home alternative, or get more battery life, we’re working to help you understand your phone and utilize its full potential.

One of the more common, but nevertheless needed, types of content in this vein are app reviews, and you’ll be seeing more and more of them here at DroidDog. From old classics like ChompSMS to lesser-known bundles like Beautiful Widgets, we’ve got video and written reviews coming your way. So stay tuned for those and more new content at the site. Don’t worry, Carlos is still making his hack and mod vids, but we want to provide just as much content for the 1st time Android user as we do for the seasoned hacker. Stick around. I think it will be interesting.

DroidDog has a couple of new features to announce this week, the first of which is our own OSX Dashboard Widget. Thanks, Dan! Secondly, DroidWars is back and will be turning up every….time I have a chance to produce one.

Apps

It seems like apps were where..it’s…at(?) once again, and we spent a fair amount of time covering them. The most interesting in terms of Market news was a little program that is currently generating the developer 13k a month. Wow. DARPA is offering a contract that could dwarf this app’s revenue, however, and I thought some silly coverage was in order.

Carlos took a look at the latest Twicca update, which includes a handy widget. He also produced a video review at the request of Devin Snipes of an app called Doodle Jump. Other than a bit of a flurry surrounding the launch of HootSuite, I think the most stirring app of the week was a 3D beast of a game called ExZeus.

Hacks & Mods

Dustin shot his first video review (nice work, Dustin!) and in it he demonstrates the 180-degree rotation in CyanogenMod. Carlos also reviewed 5.4.0.1 here.

Phones
The best phone/gadget news of the week – in my book – was the unboxing of HTC’s Legend. Good grief, that is a sexy device. Next on the list would be a small Incredible leak, if it wasn’t a reiteration of the info we already knew: It’s nice.

Motorola’s HS1001 is an interesting take on Android home phones, which seems to be a trend in product development. Speaking of trends, Gigabyte added another e-reader to the mix this week. The biggest leak was that of the coming Droid and Eris 2.1 update, which we have now seen on video.

Other stuff

Alberto droped some more of his analytical skill this week, taking a look at some market statistics and the whole Apple/Google thang.

While it probably won’t surprize any of you to learn that most Android users are male and that Android has a higher percentage of free apps than other mobile operating systems, this first bit of news might catch you off guard: Android is now outselling the iPhone in the midwest. I personally think that this indicates that 98% of the people living there already owned an iPhone before the date range included in the study, but it’s still interesting.

Hacks & Mods

For me, this week was all about hacking, as I finally took the plunge and rooted my Nexus (I actually typed G1 the first time around there. *backspace, backspace*). I made a video tutorial on how to take your N1 from stock to MoDaCo’s excellent Sense-equipped Alpha 10 Desire ROM. And just a reminder: If you want more than what’s covered in that last link, check out Carlos’ review of Alpha 6. I also made a video on flashing CyanogenMod 5.0.4 today, but I’m not sure it’s worth posting. I didn’t install the Google apps addon properly. I might reshoot it. Then again, maybe someone else will review it! CM has added multi-colored trackball notifications, customizable live wallpaper, and 360-degree rotation. I didn’t check all of the features when I flashed, but it sounds pretty sweet.

For those of you on Windows Mobile that want a taste of 2.1, check out this hack that allows you to test drive without losing your WinMo install.

Updates

For the rest of you Android lovers that don’t want to hack or can’t find a 2.1 ROM, good news: All US Androids are reportedly headed for 2.1, eventually. Let’s just hope none of you end up with the headaches the latest Cliq update brought with it.

Phones, Gadgets, Carriers, and Stuff

It was a pretty big week for leaks and rumors about upcoming phones, and HTC, once again, dominated the headlines. A VZW inventory list was leaked, featuring the Incredible (on video here), and we also heard the date March 23rd for Desire on Verizon. And we may have some info on that’s phones final destination with AT&T as well as that of Legend with Sprint.

Dell’s Mini 5 is headed for AT&T and expected to be the beginning of a family of products, and we just got some new specs. Noah took a bath with Moto’s Devour and the phone can be had for $99 (not the one he bathed with. That one’s $3.99). Acer’s Liquid is going to Rogers and Cricket will be embracing the green robot.

Ugh, there’s more? I’m ready for the next section. Magic+ brings Sense, Entourage Edge dual-screen does something else, and o2 grabs the X10.

App News

Canadians should be seeing paid apps very soon, but the best are almost always free. Google Earth has been released for Android, but only to those running 2.1. Boxee built a Wi-Fi remote for Android and Fennec seems to be inching its way towards release. Flash, BTW, is turning out to be quite the discerning software.

What a week! Mobile World Congress in Barcelona proved to be the source of a ridiculous amount af Android announcements, demos, revelations and more. And since I don’t want to deprive DroidDog readers of any major stories, I’ll list absolutely as many as I can here while retaining the summary format that we follow on Saturdays. I wish I knew how to yodel…in text.

Phones and Gadgets

HTC announced the Legend and Desire – two Sense-equipped, lovely Androids running 2.1. You can see the official “first look” videos here. Both handsets are on pre-order status.

Sony Ericsson, who says they turned down Google’s offer to make the first G-Phone, put out a quick demo vid for devs of the X10 Mini and the X10 Mini Pro. Meanwhile, our old suspicions were pretty much confirmed that the X10 is likely to be heading to AT&T. Ma Bell also announced the Motorola Backflip (good time to mention the Cliq XT) which will sell alongside the Dell Mini 5, while Verizon’s Devour is already available at Best Buy for $150.

Other devices worth mentioning are the Pulse Mini, the ZTE Smooth, and the Samsung Halo.

Hacks, Mods, & Customization

This week’s hacks and mods were all about two things: The Nexus One and Desire. The Desire ROM is making its way into that hands of hackers around the world, and Carlos (who just got a Nexus) has a video review up. But before he flashed Sense, he went after a Kspec theme that looks really nice. Also see the OpenEclair update Carlos posted. Andrew Steffy has a hacked Nexus as well, and he over-clocked that badboy to 1.1 GHz. Me? I’m at the n00b end of the Android hacking spectrum. I installed the Sense keyboard and left everything else as-is.

Apps

Google released their Shopper app this week, and while it it’s infancy, the program is likely to put a few other apps out of business. I’ve seen an increase in the number of comparisons to WalMart in the last few months. We know that Flash and AIR are on their way, and Google is at work preparing for official support.

Other apps of note: Opera 10, FiOS remote, and official ebay.

Cha-cha-cha-cha-changes!

The DroidDog renovation continues this week with our new mobile site! As with the desktop version, subtle tweaks and trimmings are likely to continue but I can finally say that we’ve got a mobile home to call our own…

Work continues on the main site, in the forums, and anyplace else that needs another feature or a little bit of polish. It’s not all about aesthetics and cool doohickeys though, new content and contributors will continue to pop up and as of now, you’re going to be reading news, leaks, and more from a man named Evan Selleck. Evan is an experienced tech blogger, Community Director, Editorial Director, husband and father, and we’re glad to have him on board. I just typed, then corrected, “blooger,” so you know I need all the help I can get. Your work is much appreciated, Evan. Check out Evan’s first day of work with posts on the Moment 2.1 upgrade rumor, clarification on the Droid’s 2.1 update, and a price slash on the Camangi Webstation. (Last minute add-on: TED attendees get N1s.)

Dustin Earley continues to stay on top of the news and he’s been posting the DroidDog Daily for those moments those tidal waves of Android info come splashing down and it’s just not possible to cover each little item with a dedicated post. If you like the Saturday Wrap on the weekends, you’ll dig the occasional Daily popping up in your reader. Subscribe to it via RSS here.

Alberto Vildosola is a new contributor with a powerful lust for tech and the knowledge/resources to match. Alberto is an insightful writer and I’m really happy to have him on board. Check out his author page for all of the news he’s covered this week. There’s some great stuff in there.

Garrett Furr will also be posting more at the site. You might already know Garrett as the video reviewer that turns up in some of Neil Lund’s written reviews. They work together to bring the two media together for more comprehensive evaluations of apps, tutorials on hacks, and whatever else they might be cooking up right now. You can see the result of their teamwork in their post on Orb Live.

Carlos reviewed the FastTest ROM by HTCClay this week, and would have had another review up had I not reset the DroidDog YouTube password without realizing that it would reset the password of the email that YouTube used to send password reset info to. There’s some half-baked Google account integration for you. It took me two days to figure out that I needed to reset the password at GMail in order to get a link in another email account, so I’m really not in a position to call Google’s work half-baked. Anyway, stay tuned for another great cooked ROM vid from Carlos.

Things to Come

Have you noticed anything about DroidDog lately? Maybe it looks a little different… feels a bit different. Well, it does, but we’re just starting to get warmed up. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, and while I can’t say what’s going on, or when it will be implemented, I can promise you that change is in the air. Stay tuned, because you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! For the time being, check out the forums and let me know if you want to see specific features.

Growing, growing, growing…

Alberto Vildosola joined the team this week with an insightful post on the implications of Google’s recent Nexus One Update. He’s generated a thoughtful and fascinating comment thread, so give it a read and contribute to the conversation!

Dustin Earley has been bangin’ out the news, as usual, covering topics as diverse as the Dell Mini 5 passing the FCC, the Weather Channel’s use of QR Codes, and some Android figurines that might not carry the inherent stigma of other dolls for males. Dustin’s got some new content in the works, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

For those of you with a penchant for the video reviews, check out Carlos’ take on Twicca, as well as his overview of the Open Eclair ROM. Neil Lund, Garrett Furr, and John Michael Guerra put together a multi-faceted review of Swype that you G1 owners will want to watch/read.

Things to Come

With the ultra busy season of launches and announcements behind us – well, one of them – now seems like a good time to look ahead at the devices of tomorrow! Ooooooh, cue the soaring, futuristic synth fx! The myTouch Slide (previously known as Espresso) was recently photographed and the keyboard looks fantastic. Can’t wait to get my digits on the trackpad, either. Speaking of HTC *wooooosh* PHONES OF THE FUTURE(!), the hotly anticipated Bravo turned up again, and this time, we can see that the five LEDs from that early render have been consolidated. It looks like HTC also has a Nexus One for AT&T in store.

Motorola’s Zeppelin made its first public appearance, and it’s the first of many Androids for Moto this year.

A couple of tablets are turning heads at the moment, one from Dell, and the next Archos. Sammy’s got a follow-up for the Galaxy, and I’m wondering if it’s any indication of Behold III. Forget the Cube, it’s Pyramid time, baby!

Rumors, Leaks, Etc.

Actual news is starting slow down a bit, or so it would seem after the hectic holiday season and CES. So what do we tech-obsessed nerds do with our time when nothing’s going on? We make stuff up, of course. We also scour the Universe for hints of real news, and get overly excited if we find something. Take for instance the myTouch v. 1.2, which should probably be ignored until some new specs are slapped on. Am I being to cynical. It’s all meant in good humor. C’mon, it’s Saturday night!

The long-rumored myTouch Slide just got profile boost, and the lovely Bravo is starting to turn up in news again. I’m excited about that one. Reeeaaaalllly. (That was totally not sarcastic.) Until I get a crack at that phone, I’ll be focusing on the Nexus One, a device for which nifty accessories are beginning to buzz.

The Zeppelin name is back again, but it didn’t bring anything else with it. Meanwhile, Calgary has journeyed halfway to reality. A fan render of the Nexus Two made its way around the webernets this week, but I’m only interested because I got mentioned on Phoneage. I’m just using the Shadow bit as an excuse to link to Jon’s video as often as possible.

Updates

There was all kinds of update news this week, and a chunk of it turned out to be bad/sketchy. I’ll skip some of that, but Droid is *not* getting a minor OTA update, and who knows about 2.0 on the G1. We’re told that Pulse will see 2.1 (great news), and the Archos 5 IMT did see a bump.

Apps

It’s been an interesting week in terms of app coverage, and I’ve got to say that I miss covering them regularly. There must be a remedy for such an ailment. I did make a list of my favorite apps for use on the Nexus One, and it turned out to be 8 pages long. Andrew covered a Creole/English translator for the cause of raising awareness of – and hopefully inspiring support for – the rescue/clean-up/rebuilding operation in Haiti.

TweetCaster is a hot topic for the type of people who are reading this on the weekend (don’t feel bad – I’m writing it), so you should check out Carlos’ video review and Justin’s written. I took a look at a dialer for the telephone control freak (again, I’m writing it) called Dialer@Bar. Wrapping up the app section here, check out SE’s 3D mapping and read on Motorola’s Shop4Apps. I am the segue master!

Hacks and Mods

Not a huge weeks for hacks and mods, but Carlos delivered a nice review of Backup for Root Users. A couple of new how-to’s have popped up in the form of a Milestone rooting tutorial and Giz’ guide to multi-touching your Nexus. Lock the door, please.

Launches, Pseudo-Launches, and Launch Anticipation

The Clapton inspired and promoted myTouch 3G Fender LE is appearing on your local television, and it does look pretty cool. What do you think of the InTouch Max? I have to admit I’m kinda partial to MotoRoi, So here are a bunch of Korean ads featuring it. Take care.

Android Versions

For those who haven’t been following Android over the last year, Google has chosen a sweet and comforting convention for naming different versions of their mobile operating system:

1.5 is Cupcake
1.6 is Donut
2.0 and 2.1 are Eclair

and here’s the surprize…

The next version is reported to be Froyo (as in frozen yogurt), and not Flan, as has been anticipated for some time. No word on when we can expect the update or what the version number will be, but at least we can get started with the blog thumbnails featuring the next treat.

Google has released the Android 2.1 SDK, so Froyo must be on their plates (in their bowls, cups?) right now.

Updates

Because I missed the Wrap on 1/09 due to CES, I’m going to try to cover all of the device updates that have been announced since January 2nd. I’m thinking that I’ll need to get a post together theat clarifies where the major phone sit in regards to updates as they’re getting increasingly difficult to track. Please speak up in the comments if anything is missing here.

The Samsung Moment is getting another update, CL14, which takes care of some fixes but doesn’t bring a new version of Android. Verizon’s Eris will also be receiving such an update. HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, Moto’s Cliq, Dext, Milestone, and Backflip will all get 2.1 in the 1st half of 2010. Cliq may see 2.0.1 before 2.1.

I should also mention that Motorola will be working towards multi-touch on all of their devices going forward.

Phones

There’s plenty of news about new and rumored phones, so let’s just dive right in. Bravo is now expected to launch sooner than we previously thought, and I am hotly anticipating this phone. It’s right next to Nexus for me in terms of fascination. I hope I get to try one out SOON.

T-Mobile is finally launching their limited edition Fender myTouch and the Milestone will be hitting Canada by the end of the month. (Hello mutli-touch on AT&T’s 3G!)

Is Motorola working on Ruth and the Nexus Two? No, no, no… NOOOO! (Sorry.)

Nexus

I finally got my own Nexus One, but got tangled up in T-Mo’s contract eligibility drama and ended up paying full retail. Looks like I won’t be a part of that price adjustment. I unboxed it on video and started one of my questions/requests video posts.

The N1 has been rooted though the benefits are currently limited. Broader use of multi-touch is likely to come along, but I’m not very motivated at this point. I can get screenshots with a home replacement and the processor is clocked high enough for me. Not sure if I’ll end up hacking it or not. Depends on what the community comes up with! (Probably plenty of irresistible root-required apps.)

I personally haven’t experienced problems with the EDGE/3G issue. Check out Andrew’s myTouch vs. Nexus vid and his look at live wallpapers.

Rumors and Buzz

This week (when not slave to the Nexus One, which could be headed for AT&T) was all about other rumors and buzz. We heard about two new Motorolas that we might see at CES along side an HTC tablet. We dreamed about playing video games with our shoes (?) and moderating WordPress from our Androids – perhaps a G1 running 2.1. But one of the more interesting topics of the week, for me, was where Google Voice might be headed.

The Nexus Flexess from Long Beach to Texasss

Right. So I can’t very well go one without talking Nexus One, huh? Well, it’s not such a chore this week because we finally got some decent info. Google has sent out invitations for a January 5th event at which the now-rooted Nexus One should be announced. We should also gain insight to their plans for VoIP, if any exist. Until then, check out some images and benchmarking, a video of the wallpaper, and what is, by far, the best Nexus One coverage yet.

Hacks & Mods

The rooting of Nexus One, while surprizing, is a pretty good indicator of how vibrant and ardent the Android hacking community has become. Not to mention popular. We’re glad to have Carlos on board to show us how this stuff works and where to direct our attention. This week, he covered a new Super D ROM and reviewed the Darkstar theme. He also made a video tutorial on getting 10 extra MB of memory on hacked G1s.

Oh, the Flan media gallery was ported to Droid (running 2.0.1) and the Cliq ROMs are on their way.

Leaks

The land of leaks was sparse this week, but check out Devour in silver, the Shadow, and LG’s LS680.

Laters, 2009…well, maybe not.

I don’t expect much nostalgia for last year, but it was worth a quick look back at cell phones and advertizing.
