Many Verizon customers read – with giddy excitement – yesterday’s news that Android 2.1 dumps for both the Droid and Eris have been leaked to xda-developers. We saw video evidence of the bump at work on the Droid a few days ago, but this is the first (that I’ve seen anyway) of the upgrade on Eris. Q2 is still the projected dats for a public release, folks, but at least we know it’s out there. Check the video after the break:
By far, the number one question I get about Android devices is, “when will my xxx get the x.x update?” And while I still don’t have information more specific than quarter on the most anticipated updates that I do know about, I can allay your 2.1 envy, if you have it, that is. Taylor Wimberly of Android and Me is reporting that all US Androids will receive the update – some OTA, and others via a PC tether – and most of them will happen within the next four months. Wimberly also hears that the G1 and myTouch will be the initial first gen phones to see the bump.
We already knew that it’s coming to Verizon, and that it was kicking around in the wild, but this is the first video showing it in action: HTC’s Sense-packing Incredible. I think I’ve seen this before. It was posted on YouTube on February 7th. Nevertheless, it’s worth posting here:
Here’s an interesting video depicting a gigantic model of a new Philips PMP that may or may not be shipping in Q3. The model is not a dummy though, and while it’s unclear if this video (after the break) represents interaction with the actual interface or if we’re looking at a mock-up, Philips’ UI design looks great and word that this thing – in a much smaller form – will ship with Android 2.1 has me intrigued. Engadget is listing Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS as features and up to 64 GB of internal memory. Sounds kinda tasty but I still think Android needs an official, universal media syncing solution in order to really take off in this market.
If you love HTC hardware but hate Windows Mobile, If you’re human, you would probably like to run Android on the HTC WinMo device you’re rockin’, whether it be the Kaiser/Tilt, Vogue, Niki, or Polaris. And thanks to xda-developers, you now can. That ROM will leave you without some functionality – like the camera and Bluetooth – but as you can imagine, people are working on it. As Mobile Magazine points out, you could always try the ROM via HaRET without wiping your WinMo install.
