Android really is becoming a household name/concept, and I’m glad to see this kind of coverage on a local news show. But Cliq and Hero? Hmm. I’m not really sure why those phones were chosen, but they are well established and can be had relatively cheap for the casual smartphone user or feature phone convert. Noah’s getting to be as natural on the tele as the hosts he’s appearing with!

Hey there, Cliq owners. I know you’re hoping for a major upgrade (as in firmware), but all I can offer you is a bundle of fixes and enhancements, primarily aimed at the battery, touch screen performance (YAY!) and Bluetooth. Hey, it’s better than nothing, right? You can check out the full details of the update over at Moto’s official support page, but some of the major improvements are faster GPS, improved screen sensitivity (does that mean it doesn’t need recalibration all the time?), better audio quality, and some rearranged UI elements. I’ve copied Motorola’s update instructions below.

For a successful installation, we recommend installing these updates while the battery in your phone is fully charged. Make sure you have an active SIM card installed in your phone. This software update will be accomplished in two steps.

First Step:

Select the Settings icon in the main menu.
Select About phone and then select System Updates.
Select Download; after the software is downloaded, select Install.
After the software is installed, your phone will re-start automatically.

Second Step:
After your phone restarts, you will receive a prompt to download the second update. If you are not automatically prompted for the second software update, you should manually check for updates.
From the main menu, select the Settings icon, select About phone, select System Updates.
Select Download; after software is downloaded, select Install.
After the software is installed, your phone will re-start automatically.
Your phone is now updated with 1.4.8 software.

Well, well, well… Motorola seems to be the talk of the town today. The bad news is that it isn’t all good news. It’s been going around for a minute now that a recent update to the Cliq has made things less than desirable, something Moto would like to fix. It looks like they’re working hard on a permanent solution, but for now, they’ve got ya covered.

You’re waiting for the update to 2.1, we know, but apparently Motorola wants to rub it in your face that you can’t have it yet. They’re planning on pushing out an update this week that is specifically designed to address lingering issues with the touchscreen, battery life, and GPS. According to Motorola: “CLIQ users: an update is coming this week with enhancements for battery life, touchscreen, and GPS. We’ll alert you when you can download it.” This info came way of their Twitter account (like most things, nowadays), and unlike some other update mishaps, we have no reason to think that Moto won’t get this to customers. Who knows, maybe the fixes in battery life and touchscreen are meant to address the 2.1 update due in the second quarter.
