Dell’s Mini 5 (Streak) gets more interesting by the day

I have to admit that Dell’s Mini 5 has been more of a curiosity to me than a potential wish list contender. It looks really nice, has a glorious 5″ WVGA screen and a 5MP cam, but who wants to lug that thing around in their pocket? It can’t be comfortable, and that makes it an unlikely purchase or recommendation for me. However, Dell’s bulky gadget just gained a few points in my eyes.

Not only will the Mini 5 (referred to internally as Streak) be shipping in a multitude of colors, but Amazon.com is on board, providing Kindle “book reader” applications, Amazon MP3, streaming video, and the Amazon Store. I’m still not sure I would this it for my daily use phone, but it would be cool to have around the house. Check out the slides that are the source of this information, posted by Engadget :

Dell Mini 5 to AT&T, looking good

dell-mini-5-internet-tablet-10Dell’s Mini 5, which houses a 5″ inch screen, is definitely going to be turning up on AT&T’s network and may also be headed to T-Mobile – or so the MWC buzz claims. And while it was previously thought that device may ship with Android 1.6, Dell has now proclaimed that “something newer” will power the phone/MID. Most are suspecting that “something newer than 1.6″ means Android 2.1.

As you can see in the iGizmo vid after the jump, the “phone” looks incredibly large in the hand. Or is that guy just really tiny? Will that thing even fit in my front pocket? It seems like MID is more appropriate terminology here, but events at MWC seem to have everyone rethinking that characterization and looking at the beast as a cell phone. This one will handle video calling with its front-facing camera and features pins that communicate with a HDMI-out-equipped dock. As you can see, it looks like a capable video player:

Dell Mini 5 Passes Through FCC

dell-m01m-fcc

A little over a week ago, we got a sneak peek of the Dell Mini 5 from Michael Dell himself. It only makes sense that you would see it pass through the FCC any time now right? Awhile before we saw Mr. Dell showing off the Mini 5, it was being said that a company by the name of Qisda would be manufacturing it. On the right side of the picture you see the inside of the battery cover on a certain Qisda M01M, the prototype device spotted in Shenzhen looking a lot like a Mini 5, a whole lot. On the left side of the picture you see the label included in the FCC filing for a device bearing the same exact name. Coincidence? Nah. At this point it’s pretty safe to say we officially have clearance of the Dell Mini 5 through the FCC, complete with those AT&T 3G bands so many of you have been lusting after. No one knows exactly when the Mini 5 will launch or exactly what it will be equipped with, but we do know it will be something to pay attention to. Keep checking back with DroidDog for news, and don’t forget to join to the forums for a little after post reading discussion.
