The back-and-forth shenanigans regarding the 2.1 Motorola Droid update is probably almost as frustrating to bloggers as it is to the owners of said gadget. And while we may not know when or exactly what,
something is in the air. The image above, capped by
Droid Life, shows a grab of the Droid product page over at Motorola, including the link, “SOFTWARE UPDATE NEW.” It’s pointing to an old update, but if DL is correct, this link (emphasis on the word
new) is new itself. A remnant of the company-wide stutter that started this whole debacalu? (Tip o’ the hat to Mr. Morgan.)
The image after the break, from
Android Central, reveals that Verizon employees have been assured that the update is still expected to roll out soon.

What a tangled blogosphere we weave when first we practice to break leaks. it wasn’t even a leak, really, when Motorola announced via their Facebook fan page that 2.1 would be rolling out sometime this week. In fact, it seems like it was just one manifestation of a company-wide temporary case of Tourette.
There was a page posted in Moto’s FAQ that detailed what users would find in the update, and perhaps more importantly, what they wouldn’t. That page is gone now and I’m starting to wonder if the early withdrawal was a response to public complaints about the lack of 2.1’s new app drawer and live wallpaper. As of now, only the Nexus One has those features and it seems like there’s a pretty good chunk of folks (granted, the unhappy few often speak loudest) don’t think it’s fair for Google to reserve some Android features for their own phones. Is it really that big a deal? Anyway, with Mobile World Congress about to kick off, perhaps Moto just brought the hammer down on a couple of anxious folks with loose lips.

EDIT: I guess I missed the latest on this update. There’s something to be said about official announcements. Please see comments.
It should be dropping at any moment. The blogs will be buzzing with accounts of the update, comments praising the new features, and complaints about those that are seemingly restricted to “Google Phones.” What about you? Has your Droid been updated? Whether it has or not, I’d like to know what you think about not having live wallpapers and the new app drawer. Does the eye candy really matter? I don’t even use those features.
You’ll still have Maps 4.0 with Buzz; pinch-to-zoom in Maps, the native browser and (3D) gallery; Google Goggles; News and Weather widget, and more. I have a feeling that people will be pretty satisfied with the update, even if it seems they’re getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop right at this moment. If you were Google, wouldn’t you keep some features to yourself? Maybe I’m just saying that because I have a Nexus One.

Just a couple of days ago we were talking about Android and fragmentation, and lo and behold this pops up.

Droid users will soon be able to get their hands on some 2.1 goodness. There’s a catch though, apparently live wallpapers and the new app drawer won’t make the jump to the Droid. It is not clear yet if it’s because of the Droid’s hardware or maybe these improvements are Nexus-device only; time will tell. But hey, at least you get multi-touch and the news and weather widget. Right?

I welcomed an update for my Nexus One last night with open arms, as it brought pinch-and-zoom functionality to Maps and the stock browser and gallery apps. I filmed the update for the obsessively curious and will post later today. But if you’re a Droid user, there’s no need to wait for that multi-touch jazz. Go download Google Maps v. 3.4 from the Market right now. Add Multi-Touch Gallery (B&B Gallery), and Dolphin Browser, and you’ve got the same basic features Nexus users do – just not in the native apps.
