Heres another one for the “it could happen” file. There is speculation circulating around that both the HTC Hero and HTCH Magic/MyTouch will be receiving an update to the new and improved 2.1 platform. We already know of a possibility that T-Mobile already has an update to 2.1 packaged and ready for transmission. And Rogers has also confirmed that 2.1 will be coming to their Magic handsets leaving the HTC Dream (G1) on a cupcake diet.
It is still only a rumor (But a pretty good guess) because T-Mobile has only confirmed that the new MyTouch Fender edition will be receiving the 2.1 update. But no official word has been released about the original MyTouch 3G or G1 yet.
HTC has also already confirmed that the HTC Hero (GSM) will be receiving the Android 2.0 update in the near future. But now rumors are making the rounds about a 2.1 update coming as early as Febuary 15. This will more than likely exclude the Sprint HTC Hero for now.

Remember when I mentioned that hackers were working on a ROM for the recently rooted Motorola Cliq? Well here’s a video from one hacker who has been cooking one and releasing progress updates via Twitter. The ROM is still missing some features, but he is making progress. Check it out:

- Motorola Droid – “The DROID sports a great feel and also has the looks, even if some say it is a little too ‘DROID-ish.’”
- HTC Hero – “The Hero arrived on the shelves with the already known HTC Android chin, yet it lost that feature on its way to the US market, where it already landed on Sprint and Verizon.”
- Samsung Galaxy I7500 – “For what it’s worth, Galaxy is one of the nicest devices running under Android, and might remain this way for a long time from now on.”
- “HTC Phones” (Magic and Tattoo) – “Next on the list, there are two HTC phones, both of which easily earn a place in the top, namely the HTC Magic and Tattoo”
- Sony-Ericsson Xperia X10 – “Xperia X10 might be seen as falling behind already available phones like the Acer Liquid or others, yet it looks as appealing as any handset can be, so we’ll include it here.”

It seems like we’re covering a lot of geeky hacks and mods lately, but that happens to be where some of the most exciting Android news is going down at the moment. But have no fear, I’m sure to return from CES in a week-and-a-half with all sorts of juicy on the new handsets. Until then, we’ve got plenty of rumors, buzz, and clever ways of getting more out of “yesterday’s devices.”
I know a lot of people were happy when the Motorola Cliq hacking community finally achieved root, and I also know that some were a bit disappointed when they found that no ROMs were available for flashing.
