Looking for a weekly nutshell of Android news? The Saturday Wrap is for you.

This has been quite the week for Android. “Back to school” time is officially here, and you know what that means: More fall leaks, handset releases, savings everywhere, and of course, the impending holiday season rumors begin. If you think this is a busy time for Android, just wait until November. For now though, let’s concentrate on the present. This week we have some great leaks and updates to talk about, as well as some amazing handsets on the brink of release. So without further ado, let’s get right into this:

Device news:

This week in device news, there wasn’t really one device that stole the show… it was more like one company. Samsung has been working overtime to make their Galaxy series devices the absolute top of the line. They have succeeded. The device(s) have been unlocked, put on sale, made available for pre-sale, DivX HD certified, rooted… Samsung Galaxy products alone have made the headlines near 20 times this past week. Quite impressive. Here’s the rest of the list:

Verizon’s Fascinate coming September 9th
Samsung Epic 4G; $199 Amazon pre-order now
Verizon Fascinate launch appears imminent
Epic 4G manual leaked
Another Galaxy Tab video
Bizarre bug plagues Galaxy S devices
Samsung tab teaser video
More Samsung Tab photos
The Galaxy S uses Gorilla Glass
Samsung Epic 4G commercial
Toshiba Smartpad to be shown at IFA
Samsung Tab spotted on train?

Ready for the rest of the device news? There’s still plenty more worth looking over including just about everything you can imagine:

More rumors of the Black Friday HTC tablet
Notion Ink Adam update
More G2 possibilities and a 09/29 ship date
Velocity Micro Cruz Reader and Tablet ready for pre-sale
Motorola Quench XT5 details
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 info, courtesy, FCC
HTC PC10100 makes it’s way through the FCC
Dell Aero available now
Motorola Charm preview
LG Loop available now
G2 is going to be really fast, features Snapdragon/Adreno
Motorola Kobe/Diablo shows it face
Motorola Charm launches without UMA
G2 almost certainly dropping 9/29
U.S. Cellular launches HTC Desire
New Verizon HTC device looks hawt
Viewsonic ViewPad is an OlivePad rebadge?

Software news:

When update news sits on the top of the stack in the software section of the Wrap, things just seem right. There’s been a couple of good updates here and there, along with some really great hacks, but nothing compares to Verizon finally pushing out Froyo to the DROID Incredible. This has been rumored time and time again, so finally see it happen, well let’s just say it’s nice. If you are using an Incredible and haven’t seen the update yet, fear not, it’s coming. In the meantime, here’s a healthy amount of reading to hold you over:

Motorola’s Android update plans
DROID 2 update
Backflip and Cliq XT get rooted
DROID Incredible lands a Froyo ROM
HTC EVO 4G with Froyo rooted
DROID 2 rooted
Orange: FroYo Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire “delayed”

App news:

The highlight of this weeks big app news isn’t so much about apps in the market, but more of apps to come. Some of you may remember the G2 ROM that was leaked earlier this week (if you don’t read up on it here). Well Andrew Steffy took it upon himself to extract the GAPPS from said ROM to see what he could find. The results were great. Not only did flashing the entire GAPPS package over a Cyanogen ROM work perfect, there was some new goodies inside. The best of which are related to the Google Voice app. There appears to be two new widgets for Google Voice coming soon: 1 for quick inbox access, and 1 settings widget. There’s no telling whether or not this was just a good time for Google to announce a new widget, or if T-mobile has something sneaky up their sleeve. Only time will tell.

Of course, there’s plenty of other great app news to catch up on this week as well; TweetDeck beta 5, the Firefox Fennec alpha release, and a simply amazing Google Earth update to name a few:

Google’s Licensing system defeated?
Google’s response to hacking of their app protection
Wattpad updates Android app
Gameloft’s Try & Buy for Android: how to

Videos and reviews:

Have you been looking for a good app in the Android Market to stream TV? If you’re willing to pay for it, soon enough. Bitbop for Android is a newer app to be released shortly that features streaming over all connections, plus the ability to download and watch later, for one low monthly fee ($10). Considering that the app is still in demo form, Bitbop is shaping up to be an excellent alternative to the other paid TV services. Look for more information on the app soon.

Marques was busy this week again putting out yet another amazing review you won’t wanna miss. This time around, he’s taking a look at AK Notepad. AKN is an extremely useful, well organized notepad app that is essential for jotting down quick thoughts to share or reference later. To get a good feel for the app, check out the review here, and download from the Market now.

———-

Well everyone, that’s a Wrap! You may be caught up now, but by the time next week rolls around… well don’t expect things in the wide world of Android to slow down much. It’s only going to get better from here. This week, I will leave you all with two great posts to read more into, one fun and one informative. The fun piece comes to us in the form of an advertising campaign for the Logitech Revue. Personally, I love it. Last but not least, the informative piece to check out comes from John and is about his “24 hours on the EVO power plan.” Alright guys, thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next week. Enjoy!

Looking for a weekly nutshell of Android news? The Saturday Wrap is for you.

Salutations DroidDog readers, and welcome to another edition of the Saturday Wrap. Just like every week, we have seen a lot of content come through the doors of DD. Also just like every week, there is one story that grabs the attention of anyone who passes by. So what was it this week? This week would easily have to be the HTC G2 from T-Mobile. Early adopters of Android, and by early I mean the first, finally have their true successor. While we may not yet know everything, we know a lot more now than we did a week. Let’s get right into this:

Device news:

With the newest round of G2 leaks, we can safely say our knowledge on the device has expanded immensely. Simply know what the device looks like can justify saying that. However, there is still a lot we don’t know. Is the G2 the same as the Desire Z? What are the exact specs? How much will it be? When will it release? Here’s what we think we know: The G2 is most likely the same device as the Desire Z. The specs of the G2 and DZ both match up with the specs listed for the G2 “Blaze” that was once listed on WalMarts website. All three devices also share one common mystery, the exact firmware and UI. DZ says 2.1, WalMart says Sense, and it’s been going around for awhile now that the G2 with Google will be stock vanilla. So really, who knows. The specs are at least a 3.7″ screen, and Snapdragon processor, and a hard QWERTY. We know that for sure. Pricing is still up in the air, but if I had to guess, $199 on contract is the norm here. Finally, release is complicated. Originally, we heard September 9th. We would know more if that was true. Then we heard the 29th of September. That makes a lot more sense. But, there is also whispers of an early release for current customers and employees.

Phew. Feel caught up now? Good. While T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ Android handset my have stolen the spotlight, that doesn’t mean nothing else deserves some attention. Here’s some more posts you may wanna check out:

Software news:

Usually the software news section is taken over by one thing or another. This week, it’s a pretty even mix. Although I must admit, the most exciting news certainly belongs in the updates category. Just yesterday, a ROM for the DROID X hit the internet that was none other than genuine Froyo. For instructions on how to update your DROID X, be sure to read the post here. As always, only you are responsible for what you do to your device, but this seems to be pretty legit. Here’s some more software news to read up on:

HTC Wildfire rooted

App news:

This week was big for apps for more than just the apps themselves. For a long time now, buying apps has been, well quite frankly, a pain. You have to use a credit card or rely on the instability of carrier billing. If the Android Market lacks one thing, it’s consistency with how you purchase apps. According to Bloomberg, Google is said to be in talks with PayPal to work on making their service an option for purchasing apps in the Android Market. While PayPal may not be the best option for everyone, Android is all about choices. Personally, I’d jump at the chance to use PayPal over a credit card. It’s an added level of security that some of us have been using for years now. Look for more information to come on when and if the option will be available. Until then, here’s some apps to check out while you wait:

Videos and reviews:

This week we have two great reviews for you. One on Quadrant Standard from Marques and one on Vignette from Carlos.

Quadrant Standard has quickly become the standard in Android benchmarking applications. In the video above, Marques goes over exactly how QS benchmarks your Android device. Anyone interested in more info on the subject will find the review well worth a watch.

Carlos’ review of Vignette will interest anyone who out there who uses their phone as a camera… in other words… just about everyone. Check out the review here for an overview of the camera replacement “rich with features from flash settings, to editing the pre-set effects that the application comes with.”

———-

Well guys, there ya have it. Don’t forget to join us again next week for another Wrap with everything Android we can muster up. I leave you this week with some ponderings on “Cellular FM receivers, Congress, and you.” Until next time, enjoy!

Looking for a weekly nutshell of Android news? The Saturday Wrap is for you.

Congratulations owners of the original Motorola DROID, you now have a little brother to watch over. Greetings denizens of DroidDog, and welcome to another Saturday Wrap. This week has been big for a number of reasons, the biggest of all being the release of the DROID 2. Of course there was also that Dell Streak news, and TweetDeck for Android, and the Desire HD making news again… Like I said, big week. Before we get into anything else though, let’s jump into everything DROID 2 we got:

Device news:

The best thing about the DROID 2 finally being released (other than the fact those of you who have been waiting for it can finally buy it) is that there will finally be no more leaks. In my experience with Android, this has been the most leaked device to date. Let’s go over everything we saw leaked in just the past week alone:

My top 5 Reasons to look forward to the Droid 2
DROID 2 in the Sunday paper
DROID 2 mini-roundup
DROID 2 spec sheet
DROID 2 Live Wallpaper leaked
R2-DROID2 out and about
DROID 2 hands on video
DROID 2 pre-sale is live

I wasn’t kidding eh? Now that the device has launched, expect to see more coverage from us including a great comparison piece you won’t wanna miss. Until then, here’s a quick first impressions write up and a new commercial to hold you over.

In other device news, rumors of T-Mobile’s new fall lineup are getting hotter by the day. We’ve got trademark filings, rumors that the myTouch HD is the HTC Desire HD, and an HTC event that’s being speculated to mark the official unveiling of the HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more coverage on that event on September 15th. Let the countdown begin!

Here’s some more posts on device news that you don’t wanna miss:

Software news:

This weeks big software news come to us in the form of an announcement from Google. On August 12th, Google held a press conference to discuss some exciting new features coming to Android. Those features are new voice actions, and Chrome to phone. To read up on the announcement, check out John’s post here where you can also watch some informative videos.

App news:

If you don’t know what the big headliner in app news this week was, you must be living under a rock… a rock with no wifi access… or data signal… anyway… One word people, TweetDeck (it still counts as one word). First the beta was announced by the TweetDeck blog. Then we saw a quick teaser video. Then some crazy (bad) leaks hit the web. And now finally, we have an official beta. For the full run-down and links to download said beta, check out this post here.

Here’s some more app news to take a look over:

Free app RepairPal for Android launched
Disturbing Nazi Theme on Android Market (Now Removed)

Videos and reviews:

This week we have three reviews to go over. Let’s take a second to do just that.

Carlos got a chance to go over the hotly discussed TweetDeck for Android, and decided to tape it all. In the video above, he goes over just about everything you could want to see in the app. What do you guys think? Personally, I don’t like it (inb4flaming).

Next up we have Justin’s review of Camera 360. The in depth review covers digital zoom, tap to focus, and tilt shift mode among other amazing effects. There is a free and pro version in the market now, but be sure to read the review to get a good feel for what to expect first. You won’t be disappointed.

Last up we have John’s psychedelic tripped-out groovy review of aSpiritBomb live wallpaper. I really don’t want to spoil it for you, but I will tell you this: Colors. Lots and lots of pretty colors.

———-

Well, that’s all for this week. Stay tuned to the double D for everything Android including news, reviews, apps, and more. Until next time, enjoy!

Looking for a weekly nutshell of Android news? The Saturday Wrap is for you.

Boy what a week. The weather may not be a telling sign fall is on the way yet, but cell phone leaks and releases tell a different tale. With t-minus >1 month to go before school is back in session for most, expect to see even more leaks and releases any minute now. Let’s talk about we have already seen though shall we? This past week was big for a lot of reasons, and quite possibly the biggest just hit the internet last night. Here, take a look:

Device news:

The biggest device leak news to hit the web this past week comes to us courtesy of Android Swag and comes in the form of a Verizon CDMA/GSM HTC slider. The still nameless device is said to be packing a 1.2ghz (dual-core?) processor, 4″ screen, GSM world phone capabilities, and an unconfirmed release date of early 2011. Is this the device you’ve been waiting for people? If I had to guess, I’d say this may be the CDMA counterpart to T-Mobile’s HTC Vison. We’ll know a more once these devices get official, but for now, it looks like a safe bet.

Here’s some more info on leaks and upcoming devices that you may find interesting:

Garmin: revenue from phone segment in Q2 was ‘below our plan’
Nexus One Resurrected as Official Developer Phone
Brazilian Galaxy S Equipped with Digital TV

Software news:

My favorite software news comes to us this week in the form of a question, “Google, what is up with Android’s GMail outbox?” John took the time this week to ask you this: do you have problems with sending mail from Android’s GMail app? I know I do. Every so often, an e-mail I’ve tried to send will just sit in the outbox like it’s some sort 5-star jacuzzi; Never wanting to get out. It’s still incredibly annoying and mind boggling, but it does feel better to know that John, or me, aren’t the only ones. You all let us know that you have the same problem, and your fixes are all over the board. So uhh Google, what’s up? Your move.

The rest of the software news is pretty much all about updates. Whether it’s fixing Froyo on a device, or finally putting it on there, everyone’s getting a piece of the (ice cream)cake:

Froyo likely coming to DROID X in “early September”
Froyo running on the DROID X? Video proof
Froyo for the Moto DROID available now… kinda
DROID’s Froyo will not support native tether, for free
Motorola Milestone to see Froyo this September
HTC’s Froyo OTA for EVO floating around
Fix for EVOs with unofficial Froyo update
myTouch 3G Slide update

Government testing Nexus One for real-time translation
Android2Cloud demonstration video
Captivate and Vibrant get “One-Clicked”
HTC Sync Updated To v3.0

Apps:

This weeks big app news came to us in the form of updates. The biggest of which, was the bump Facebook saw to version 1.3.0. The updated featured a much needed UI overhaul and some overall optimization changes. It also came with something no one wanted; bad news for battery life. Fortunately, Facebook has already released version 1.3.1 that remedies the situation. Phew.

In other big app update news, PayPal Mobile was updated to version 2.0.0. The new PayPal features Bump, Split the Bill, a new look, and new general feel. Both updated apps, Facebook and PayPal, are available in the market now. Here’s some more app news you aren’t gonna wanna miss:

Netflix coming to Android, eventually
Dish Network content coming to Android
AT&T Code Scanner available now
Live Wallpaper: Wakka Wallpaper
PrivacyStar with Caller ID
Nimbuzz Version 2.0 brings its own VOIP solution NimbuzzOut

Videos and reviews:

I think I speak for all Android fans out there when I say we love to see Andy, our green lil buddy, everywhere we can. That’s why I know you guys will get a kick out of this:

The video above is from Andrew Steffy and shows us how to use Android on your HTC HD2 from T-Mobile. I know the hardware for the HD2 is virtually the same as all the other Android super-phones out right now, it just looks so much better. I’m curious, has anyone else out there tried this? How about on any different devices? If I had an HD2, I know I would.

This is probably the last video you see from us on the Vibrant so enjoy it while you can. John has covered your final questions and requests for the Samsung Vibrant, and the video includes Lock screen controls, night mode camera, multi-touch performance/multi-touch keyboard, exchange calendar, music player , Quadrant Standard, Linpack, Neocore, free memory, and the stock launcher. To watch the video, check out the post here.

Marques has another great written review for us this week. This time around, he covers “Cool Dropbox tips & tricks.” If you ever wanted to know more about syncing your PC and your Android devices together, this is a great opportunity to do so.

———-

Alright everyone, that’s all for this week. Of Course, stay tuned for more news, reviews, videos, and leaks; all right here on DroidDog.com. Today I leave you with two opinion editorial posts from Alberto that asks if Android has already won the mobile OS mobile war, with some numbers to back it up. Until next time, enjoy!

Looking for a weekly nutshell of Android news? The Saturday Wrap is for you.

Good afternoon readers of DroidDog, and welcome to another Saturday Wrap.

Normally, the “big hitters” of the Wrap tend to be device leaks and releases. This week however, updates seemed to rule supreme. The leaks that we do have, well they’re pretty big, but update and firmware news seemed to rule supreme. So without much further ado, let’s get right into this:

Device news:

As I mentioned above, there isn’t a ton of leaked device news, but what we do have makes up for it. There has been quite the guessing game going on between the wide world of tech and when T-Mobile will release their first HSPA+ handset lately. For the longest time, the rumor has been September. I think that is a safe bet. The actual handset… It has been long believed to be the HTC Vision/G1 Blaze/G2 Blaze. Because of the rumored release date of HSPA+, and a leaked T-Mobile road-map, it was assumed the G1 Blaze (as it’s most popularly being called now) was the HTC Vanguard. So when T-Mobile released their teaser HSPA+ page, and the name Vanguard was found in the source code, things started to make sense. Ahh but not so fast. What if it were a different device? Could the rendering of a device on the teaser page be something other than the G1 Blaze? Like the myTouch 3G HD? Very possible. Now I’m sure the guessing game will continue either way, but if I threw my 2 cents into the ring, I’d bet on both. Just keep in mind, if you play along, neither the myTouch HD or the G1 Blaze are confirmed in any way. Only time will tell how this soap opera will play out.

So what else has been going on in device news this past week? See for yourself:

Lumigon to finally launch handset by October 20th
DROID 2 user manual leak
Garminfone price drop for existing customers
Monsoon Multimedia’s Vulkano sends video to your Android

Is this a prototype of the Samsung tablet?
Motorola releases Droid X antenna, quality FAQs

Software news:

The biggest story in software news this week was delivered just yesterday afternoon. You know what I’m talking about, the next leg in the epic story that is the EVO 4G’s quest for Froyo. Here’s where we’re at: Some Sprint documents were leaked saying that by the first week of August, Froyo would be pushed to the EVO. Then, word came in that the date to remember was August 3rd. Only a few days right? Next thing you know… HTC posts the OTA update on their website! The blogsphere exploded with links and instructions. Everyone is downloading/flashing, and all seems right in the world. Until HTC pulls the update from their site, and tweets about how it’s not final, wait for the OTA. Now, I know several people who have flashed the update before it was pulled (I’m SURE there is still places to find it online), and everyone who has been using it has reported no problems as of yet. Does that mean something won’t show up? No. Does that mean HTC was right to pull the update? Yes. If they see it unfit, then it is. For whatever reason they had, it’s probably best to just hold off. Look for a quick walk through of the update in the the videos and reviews section below.

There was other big update news as well, like the Motorola DROID receiving Froyo next week as well, but alas… overshadowed it was. Here some more stuff that you might have missed:

Nexus One running 3.0 in the wild?
Android 3.0, 3.0.1, and 3.2 running…somewhere?
Desire: HTC may start rolling out Froyo tomorrow

Jailbreaking and rooting your device now legal
Energy star boot animation
Root me, unroot me: simple hacks for DROID X
HTC Legend Root Updated, now Working for Software Version 1.32.xxx
Samsung releases Captivate source code

App news:

The top of the stack in this weeks app news had to have been the new licensing that will go into effect in the next few months. The big thing to take away from it? No more pirated apps. This new level of protection will be an at will inclusion, so there will still be plenty of apps that you can install without grabbing them from the market. And I’m not talking about companies that forget to include the protection, so you can still pirate away. I mean beta apps and .apks that are passed around on forums, or what have you. Another great feature that was announced along with the licensing agreement, is a new level of carrier billing for Market purchases. Hopefully, this will allow for a rise in paid app consumption. All signs point to yes.

Here’s a couple more pieces in app news worth checking out, including a great one about making the upgrade to Launcher Pro Plus:

Top apps and games in the Android Market
Google Maps 4.4; Introducing “Places”
Adobe unveils P2P Video Calling based on Adobe Air
Accused malicious Android app developer says the story is “bull****”

Videos and reviews:

Alright guys, you know time it is, videos and review time. This week, there is a lot to go over; App reviews, accessories, handsets… you get the drift. Well here’s this weeks featured video, a Motorola DROID X unboxing from John with, you guessed it, a chance to fire off any questions you may have missed. To do just that, send John yourquestions and requests on Twitter @PhoneDog_John or via text: 503-MOB-BARK. Please use the hashtag #DROIDX.

So what else the the DroidDog crew get their hands on this week? Check it:

Dual review: Sony Ericsson X10 Mini & X10 Mini Pro
Review: Arkon’s Mega Grip car docks

———-

OK everyone, that’s a Wrap! Thanks for joining us here at DroidDog and be sure to stay tuned for everything you’ve come to know and love from us next week. This week, I want to leave you with two pieces to dwell on. The first is a snazzy new commercial from Samsung about the Captivate, and the second is a little more serious. Florida based company Augen recently announced a $150 tablet that’s available now from K-Mart (if you can find one) that has the blogsphere buzzing. If you could release a tablet for that cheap, put Android on it, and make it run well… you’ve got one heck of a deal on your hands. Well, John went looking for that tablet and instead came back with the Genbook 74. Let’s just say this, it’s not good. Check out the post titled “Why I returned Augen’s Genbook 74 in under 24 hours,” and ask yourself this: would you rather pay a little more money for a better quality product that gives Android a good name, or would you rather see our green buddy anywhere and everywhere at any cost? Personally, I pick the first option. Alright now, until next time, enjoy!
