Question about the Android OS

Can you just upgrade like you would any other operating system? ......When android 3.0 comes out will I have to buy a new phone? Or is it an over the air or I have to download and run it type thing.......

Android updates are over the air. Almost all of the phones currently running android are rumored to be getting upgraded to Android 2.1, the newest major android release. The newer phones, if not all of the phones will probably be upgraded to later versions in the future.
